"It all boils down to this: with
open-source computing you can more
readily tailor your IT system to
your strategic goals. It gives you,
the user, the power and control.
You're not tied to the
manufacturer's whims and edicts." |

This link
takes you to a recording of a panel
discussion of top IT experts who gathered
for an industry summit webcast, ³The Case
for Linux in the Federal IT Sector,² hosted
by Larstan Business Reports. The panel
comprised Paul Smith, vice president of
government sales operations, software vendor
Red Hat; Mike Fitzmaurice, Linux Business
Development Manager, solution provider GTSI;
and Scott Ruff, Hewlett-Packard's Linux
Business Development Manager. Moderated by
Larstan's editorial director, John Persinos,

Report Abstract: |
|
Increasing numbers of
federal information technology systems are
migrating from proprietary Unix operating
architecture to open source Linux, to gain
platform flexibility and several other
advantages. In the federal sector, the list of
specific computing needs for each agency or
department is a long one, but all of these
entities share one commonality: to modernize and
upgrade, their IT systems need flexibility,
adaptability, interoperability, security,
transparency - you name it. Many experts agree
that open-source architecture in general, and
Linux in particular, meet these needs far better
than proprietary, closed systems such as Unix.
The government's watershed transition to Linux
is borne out by these Larstan Business Reports.
Subject matter experts for this series include
executives from Linux International, as well as
sources from the leading Federal IT solutions
providers GTSI, Red Hat, Unisys, IBM, Novell and
HP. Each white paper discusses an important
business consideration for Federal Linux
migration including IT security; reducing total
cost of ownership; IT simplification, IT
modernization; and “Proof of Concept”
deployments. |
